Governor Hobbs has announced the closure of the Arizona State Prison in Marana, a decision that has sparked significant concern among local officials and community members. The facility, which serves as a minimum-security prison for non-violent male offenders, is set to close by the end of December 2023. This move requires current inmates to be transferred to other state prisons.

Senator Wadsack expressed disapproval of the short notice given to the prison's correctional officers and support staff. "For nearly 30 years, ASP—Marana has been a positive aspect of the community," Wadsack stated. He highlighted the prison's contributions through educational and rehabilitation programs and questioned Governor Hobbs' decision-making process, particularly during the holiday season. "Shame on our Governor for giving them only a few weeks' notice around the holidays," he added.

Marana Mayor Ed Honea also voiced his concerns regarding the impact on local families. "This came as a real shock and really hurts our community," Honea said. With nearly 90 families affected, he criticized the lack of advance notice provided to those losing their jobs just after Thanksgiving.

The closure will take effect on December 31, 2023.
