Arizona State Senator Janae Shamp (R-29) has announced the findings of a special audit, which uncovered misconduct by the Arizona Board of Chiropractic Examiners. The report identified that the Board expanded investigations by subpoenaing unrelated information, resulting in unwarranted disciplinary actions and delays.
According to a press release by Shamp, she submitted a special audit request on February 12, 2024, through the Joint Legislative Audit Committee. This action was taken in response to multiple complaints from constituents regarding the Board's handling of patient complaints and allegations.
The report indicates that the Board "did not always apply its statutes and rules consistently" among licensees. It also failed to report criminal allegations and made progress on its complaint backlog but did not resolve most complaints within 180 days. Additionally, it engaged in advocacy without clear authority, did not fully comply with state open meeting and conflict of interest laws, and lacked sufficient processes for consistent practices and communication.
"The Board has failed to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public, and I have fought hard to bring this misconduct to light," said Shamp. She added that "these boards exist to provide practitioner accountability for the safety of their patients," expressing concern over evidence suggesting intentional withholding of reports of potential criminal wrongdoing from law enforcement. Shamp said her intention to sponsor legislation aimed at preventing such abuses of authority in the future.
Shamp began her public service career in 2022. She holds a B.S. in Molecular Biosciences & Biotechnology from Arizona State University and a B.S. in Nursing from Grand Canyon University, where she is also a registered nurse. Her focus areas include election integrity, medical freedom, border security, agricultural industry support, water issues, school choice, and protecting constitutional rights.
