On March 13, 2025, a severe multi-vehicle collision occurred on westbound Interstate 40 near milepost 159.5 in Williams, Arizona. The incident took place at approximately 3:27 p.m. during a winter storm that left the road covered in snow and ice.

The crash initially blocked the interstate due to a jackknifed tractor-trailer obstructing the roadway. Additional vehicles, including other tractor-trailers, were unable to brake or slow down properly and collided with the stationary vehicles. This resulted in multiple passenger vehicles being rear-ended and pushed into or underneath the crashed tractor-trailers.

A fire ensued from the collision, spreading rapidly among the involved vehicles and burning for over 20 hours. Firefighters, state troopers, personnel from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), and tow truck operators worked tirelessly to manage the fire, provide assistance, and clear the scene.

In total, 22 vehicles were involved in this tragic event, comprising 13 passenger vehicles. Thirty-six drivers and passengers were affected by the incident; two individuals lost their lives while sixteen others sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

AZDPS Highway Patrol state troopers along with advanced collision investigators from the Highway Patrol Northern Regional Vehicular Crimes Unit are leading an investigation into this accident. They are receiving support from troopers within the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement District. Due to numerous factors such as vehicle involvement and extensive fire damage, this investigation is expected to take time.

ADOT engineers are currently assessing damage to both roadway infrastructure and surrounding areas caused by the collision and subsequent fire. Inquiries regarding this process can be directed to ADOT's Public Information Office at [email protected].

"The AZDPS would like to thank our many partner agencies for their assistance during this extensive incident," said an AZDPS spokesperson. "The teamwork displayed during this incident is a testament to the dedication of first responders within our state."

Authorities urge drivers to reduce speed and maintain safe distances between vehicles when driving under snowy or icy conditions. It is recommended that motorists carry an emergency supply kit when traveling in adverse weather conditions; a list of suggested supplies can be found at www.azdot.gov/knowsnow.

Drivers should check current road conditions at www.az511.gov especially when hazardous weather is anticipated.

Further details on this incident will not be released until investigations conclude. Final reports can be requested through public records via AZDPS's portal at psp.azdps.gov.
