The Census Bureau has ranked Arizona 36th in states that rely on government funding for their pension programs.

The Center Square reported that Arizona's public pensions, which total about $3.5 billion, are 62 percent funded by the government, with the state covering nearly $943 million of state pensions and local governments funding them at $1.2 billion. Employee contributions cover the remaining $1.3 billion.

Compared to other states, Arizona falls in the middle, the bureau said in a report from the Center Square. The state with the highest amount of government contributions is Utah at 94.14 percent. The lowest is Montana at 51.97 percent.

The Center Square reported that the Census Bureau's survey included revenue, assets and membership data and covered the 2018 fiscal year.
