The Arizona State Capitol dome will be lit purple throughout the month of October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Arizonans are encouraged to wear purple on Oct. 20 for domestic violence prevention awareness.
According to a release from the Governor's Office Website, the effort is part of the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family’s 8th annual "Lighting Arizona Purple" campaign, which aims to "connect Arizonans to critical resources, and show support for victims and survivors," the release stated.
“Today, we are reminded that domestic violence – in all its forms – is a destructive and heartbreaking problem in our society,” Ducey in the Oct. 3 release. “This month, as we see purple light emanating from around the state, we are reminded that a home should always be a place of safety and peace. The purple light also reminds us that – tragically – some homes are places of fear and cruelty."
State agencies are also committed to putting an end to domestic violence, as well as supporting victims and survivors, the release stated.
“All Arizonans have a role in ending domestic violence. We can all play a role in prevention efforts, raising awareness, and supporting those around us who may be suffering from domestic violence,” Maria Cristina Fuentes, Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family, said in the release. “Through cross-sector, multi-agency collaborations, and victim-centered responses, we improve our support for survivors, and address the underlying causes of domestic violence in every corner of our state.”
