PHOENIX – Governor Katie Hobbs and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes shared their condolences to North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall on the passing of her husband, Jesse "Tommy" Thomas Bunn.

"It is with great sadness that we offer our heartfelt condolences to a respected colleague who we are also proud to call a friend," Governor Hobbs and Secretary Fontes said. "Secretary Marshall has been an inspirational leader to both of us as current and former Secretaries of State, and we join her family, friends and fellow colleagues in mourning for the loss of her beloved husband, Tommy Bunn."

An agricultural executive dedicated to a life of civic leadership in his native North Carolina, Bunn died expectedly on Monday. He was 79.

In addition to his work in the private sector, Bunn served with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service and is a former Deputy Director and Acting Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He also led and participated in multiple international trade missions, representing the U.S. on trade issues and helping open up markets to American goods.

Currently in her 7th term, Secretary Marshall was the first woman elected to statewide office in North Carolina. She is a past president of the National Association of Secretaries of State, a recognized leader in state trademark and patent holder protections, and the recipient of multiple awards for her commitment to public service.

Governor Hobbs and Secretary Fontes are Arizona’s 20th and 21st Secretaries of State, respectively.
