Work on an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project to enhance drainage channels and infrastructure on US 89 will commence on April 1. The construction will take place approximately 12 miles northeast of downtown Flagstaff.
Throughout the project, US 89 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with work occurring both weekdays and weekends. Motorists should anticipate delays, allot extra time for travel, adhere to reduced speed limits, and remain vigilant for crews and equipment along a 9-mile stretch of the highway, from milepost 423 to 432.
The project is anticipated to conclude by the end of the year. It includes replacing portions of drainage channels damaged by monsoon runoff and debris from wildfire burn scars during the summer of 2022.
The $17 million project will encompass several activities. These include repairing drainage spillways and stormwater drains, enhancing concrete box culverts, paving as necessary, updating lane striping for work zones, and providing new striping once the project concludes. Additionally, native vegetation will be planted in areas affected by the improvements.
Temporary median crossover locations will be paved to facilitate traffic shifts during the construction of box culverts beneath US 89.
