Senate President Warren Petersen provided an update on the ongoing negotiations and work being done by Senate Republicans in the Fifty-sixth Legislature, Second Regular Session. Discussions are focused on various critical issues, including the state budget, water management, state agency continuations, and legislation concerning teachers and border security.
Regarding water management, Senator Sine Kerr has been leading negotiations on solutions for rural groundwater and urban water supply in Arizona. The Senate has been actively working on bills such as SB 1221, SB 1181, SB 1081, and SB 1172 to address water management issues and increase housing supply options.
Additionally, there is ongoing work on bills related to state agency continuations and necessary reforms highlighted by recent audits from the Arizona Auditor General. Negotiations are also underway for the "Teacher Pay Fund" plan to provide salary increases for K-12 public school teachers.
Senate Republicans are also prioritizing legislation to protect Arizonans from crime associated with border security issues. These bills aim to safeguard citizens and empower law enforcement, with plans to send them to the Governor's desk for approval. If necessary, these border-related bills may be placed on the November ballot for voter consideration.
Budget negotiations between the Legislature and the Executive have commenced after months of delay from the Governor's office. Regular meetings will be held to reach a consensus on the state budget. Senate President Warren Petersen emphasized the need for behind-the-scenes negotiations before lawmakers can vote on any remaining reforms or proposals.
In his statement, Senate President Warren Petersen mentioned, "With necessary negotiations on bills, state agency continuations, and a state budget, there is quite a bit of behind-the-scenes business that will need to be conducted at the Legislature between leadership and the appropriations teams before lawmakers can vote on any remaining reforms or proposals."
Petersen also expressed optimism that the session could be wrapped up within the next month if there is cooperation from the Governor's office. Lawmakers will only be called in for floor proceedings on a weekly basis as finalized legislation becomes available for a vote, allowing them time for off-campus work and family obligations.
