Kari Lake, U.S. Senate candidate in Arizona, stated that the cartels are "emboldened" by American border policy. The Lake campaign made the statement on X on June 27.

"The cartels are so emboldened by the open-border policies of @JoeBiden & @RubenGallego that they appear to have kidnapped a 17-year-old & her mother as they traveled through Mexico," said Lake. "I pray for their safe return & that we can be done with these disastrous Biden-Gallego policies once & for all in November."

Lake's statement was in response to the kidnapping of an Arizona teen and her mother who were traveling in Mexico, reported Breitbart. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believes they were kidnapped by a faction of the Cartel del Noreste between Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo. The road connecting Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo has been called the "Highway of Death" due to the high number of people who have gone missing in the area.

In 2023, four Americans were kidnapped in Mexico by members of the Gulf Cartel just south of the Mexican border, ABC News reported. Two of the victims died while in captivity.

In her post on X in response to the kidnapping of the two women, Lake said that she will "declare war on the cartels."

Lake is running for the United States Senate in Arizona, according to her website. She was the Republican nominee for Governor in 2022.
