Senate Republicans have announced a new leadership team to address key issues in the state. The Majority Caucus selected the team during a post-election organizational meeting.
Senate President Warren Petersen (R-14) from Gilbert will continue as Senate President for a second term. Petersen, who began his legislative career in 2012 in the State House of Representatives, has served six years there and another six in the Senate. He will start his fourth term in January. In addition to his legislative role, Petersen has over two decades of experience in real estate.
Senator T.J. Shope (R-16) from Coolidge will remain Senate President Pro Tempore. Shope's legislative experience includes roles such as Chairman of Health and Human Services and Vice Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources, Energy & Water. He was also Speaker Pro Tempore from 2017 to 2021 before joining the Arizona State Senate in 2020.
Senator Janae Shamp (R-29) from Surprise has been named Senate Majority Leader for her second term as an Arizona legislator. Shamp previously served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Health & Human Services and was a member of other committees. Before her political career, she worked as a Perioperative Nurse Manager.
Senator Frank Carroll (R-28) from Sun City West is appointed as Senate Majority Whip. Carroll transitioned from the Arizona House of Representatives to the state Senate in 2022. His background includes expertise in vehicle technology and environmental impact assessments.
The first regular session of the 57th Legislature will commence on Monday, January 13, 2025.
