The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) have launched a joint initiative aimed at enhancing safety along the I-17 Improvement Project corridor, stretching from Anthem Way to Sunset Point. As part of this effort, increased patrols by DPS troopers will be visible starting today, targeting drivers who speed or engage in reckless behavior.

The collaboration between ADOT and DPS is focused on minimizing crashes within the construction zone by addressing hazardous driving behaviors that threaten both travelers and construction crews. The agencies emphasize the importance of adhering to speed limits, maintaining safe following distances, and avoiding distractions while navigating these areas.

Since September 2022, a speed limit of 65 mph has been enforced across the entire 23-mile project area. Troopers will patrol both directions on I-17, with particular attention given to the Bumble Bee area where work on flex lanes continues. In line with the Arizona Commercial Vehicle Safety Partnership (ACVSP), commercial vehicle enforcement will also be conducted in this region.

Additional patrols are scheduled during two 12-hour overnight closures of southbound I-17 in February when the old Bumble Bee bridge will be dismantled. During this period, Bumble Bee Road will remain closed for approximately six weeks. Typically used as an emergency pull-off and turnaround point during mainline incidents causing traffic disruptions, its closure necessitates heightened monitoring for dangerous driving behaviors that could lead to accidents.

The I-17 stretch between Anthem Way and Sunset Point is undergoing extensive construction expected to last through 2025. This includes new lane additions and bridge expansions or replacements. The segment from Anthem Way to Black Canyon City is anticipated to open this spring upon completion of paving works, while the flex lanes between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point are projected for a late 2025 opening.

This design-build project aims to alleviate congestion and enhance safety along a vital commerce corridor essential for Arizona's travel, tourism, and economic growth.
