The Arizona Highway Patrol is currently investigating a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 10 near Tonopah. The incident, which occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on March 1, involved several tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles. Some of the vehicles caught fire after the crash.
Initial reports confirmed four fatalities, but an update later clarified that six people had died. Additionally, thirteen individuals were transported to hospitals with injuries. As of March 2, there are four confirmed deaths, two people in critical condition receiving life-saving treatment, one person admitted for precautionary care, and five others treated and released.
Investigators are examining whether blowing dust contributed to the collision by reducing visibility. The crash involved six commercial motor vehicles, four passenger cars, a van, and a recreational vehicle towing a trailer.
Efforts to contact all families of those involved are ongoing; therefore, no names or identifications have been released yet. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) collaborated to manage the scene and facilitate road repairs.
Eastbound lanes on I-10 reopened around 3:10 a.m. on March 2. However, drivers were initially advised to avoid the area due to closures at milepost 88. For current traffic updates or road conditions, travelers can visit AZ511.com.
