Arizona has announced the launch of an aerospace and defense-focused training facility named the Future48 Workforce Accelerator at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Mesa. This initiative forms part of the state's wider workforce development program. Governor Katie Hobbs introduced the project, alongside leaders from industry, education, and government sectors. The initiative aims to provide hands-on training for students eyeing careers in aerospace and defense manufacturing.

The collaboration involves the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA), Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), Boeing, and Honeywell. The training facility, set to open at CGCC's Williams campus in the fall of 2026, will offer a curriculum designed to prepare participants for highly-skilled positions in Arizona's aerospace and defense industry.

Governor Hobbs emphasized the project's significance, stating, "Realizing the Arizona Promise means connecting Arizonans to family-sustaining jobs of the future." The program will equip community college students with the skills needed in aerospace and defense manufacturing.

Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "The Accelerator demonstrates Arizona’s continued commitment to provide hands-on, skilled training for high-tech and growing industries."

The project has received a $6 million investment from the ACA. The facility will have advanced labs and flexible training areas. These resources aim to teach skills such as electrical assembly, mechanical assembly, and wiring.

Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, MCCCD Chancellor, highlighted the educational benefits, noting, "Through this opportunity, our system will provide critical education and training required by today’s aerospace and defense manufacturing workforce." Additionally, Dr. CJ Wurster, CGCC Interim President, remarked on the college's longstanding experience accommodating the aviation industry's workforce needs.

Accentuating their support, Christina Upah of Boeing stressed the importance of community partnerships in meeting the talent demands of Arizona's industries. Similarly, Jim Currier of Honeywell Aerospace acknowledged the Future48 Workforce Accelerator's role in preparing students for the aviation industry's workforce.

Arizona's economy greatly benefits from the aerospace, defense, and manufacturing sector, comprising over 1,200 companies. The state's contribution to this industry is substantial, generating nearly $15 billion annually. Moreover, Arizona ranks among the top five states in the U.S. for aerospace and defense employment.

Arizona's Future48 Workforce Accelerators have been bolstered by a $30 million investment from the ACA to establish advanced training facilities statewide. The aerospace and defense Workforce Accelerator follows similar projects, such as the semiconductor accelerator at GateWay Community College and the battery accelerator in Pinal County. These projects aim to address the demand for skilled professionals in Arizona's key industries.
