Arizona last year recorded a homicide rate of 6.9 per 100,000 residents, compared to the U.S. rate of 6.5 per 100,000 and the state’s 6.4 rate a decade earlier, according to newly released FBI crime data.

The increase reflected data reported to the FBI by 105 of 125 Arizona law enforcement agencies. Municipal police departments such as Phoenix's provided data to the FBI through the Summary Reporting System, which is less comprehensive than the prevailing National Incident-Based Reporting System.

Nationwide, 15,897 of 18,619 eligible law enforcement agencies submitted crime data to the FBI in 2020. Estimates based on the data showed violent crimes in the United States rose 5.6% from 2019 to 2020, although property crimes were down 7.8% over the same time period.

In 2010, the number of homicides in the nation was 4.8 per 100,000 Americans, compared to 6.5 per 100,000 last year, the FBI reported.

The arrest rate for murder and manslaughter offenses last year was 3.8 per 100,000 residents – or 58.5% of the total homicide number, according to the report.
