WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate unanimously passed bipartisan legislation cosponsored by Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema designating May 2023 as Brain Tumor Awareness Month – supporting efforts to develop better treatments for brain tumors that will improve the quality of life and the long-term prognoses of individuals diagnosed with a brain tumor.
“Designating May 2023 as Brain Tumor Awareness Month honors those who lost their lives and brings attention to our friends and neighbors living with brain tumors and their caregivers,” said Sinema.
The resolution seeks to encourage continued bipartisan efforts into developing better treatments. Brain tumors are the leading cause of death from cancer for children under 14 and the second leading cause of death from cancer for individuals ages 15 to 39. It is estimated that more than 94,000 individuals in the United States will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumor in 2023. For malignant brain tumors, the average 5-year survival rate in the United States is 35.7%, meaning that an estimated 18,990 individuals will die from this diagnosis in 2023.
Each year, Sinema leads legislation designating the third Wednesday of July as National Glioblastoma Awareness Day and calling for greater efforts to help advance treatments for brain cancers – honoring the legacy of the late Arizona senior Senator John McCain and others impacted by brain tumors.
