Arizona State Sen. Anthony Kern (R-29) criticized the former State House Democratic Leader for using the term “pregnant people” in a tweet.
“‘Pregnant People,’ LOL!,” tweeted Kern. “And you’re in an Ivy League School? ALERT: Biological men still can not get pregnant."
Kern’s tweet was in response to a tweet by Arizona State Rep. Andrés Cano (D-20), the former House Democratic Leader. Cano’s tweet was regarding Arizona laws that he said “blocked pregnant people” from getting abortions.
Cano recently announced his retirement from House leadership, and pending retirement from the Arizona House, as he will be attending the Harvard Kennedy School in Boston, Mass. He also works as the director of the “LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund” at the Community Foundation for Southern AZ.
Cano was first elected to Arizona’s 20th House District in the November 2022 General Election. He won election with fellow Democrat Alma Hernandez, with both running unopposed. He previously represented District 3 in the Arizona House from 2019 to 2023.
A native of Tucson, Cano attended City High School and Arizona State University. He also previously was as a board member of Planned Parenthood Arizona.
Kern was elected to represent Arizona's 27th State Senate District in the Nov. 2022 election. He defeated Brittani Barraza (D), winning 55 percent to Barraza's 45 percent. He previously represented Arizona's District 20 in the Arizona State House of Representatives from 2015 until 2021.
A native of Minnesota, he attended Western International University and previously worked as a Code Enforcement Officer for the El Mirage Police Department.
