Sen. Bolick: ‘We need to let kids flourish and soak up the entrepreneurial spirit’

Sen. Shawnna Bolick (R-Phoenix) said her bill to prohibit Arizona municipalities from requiring children to have a license or permit for their temporary businesses would help kids “soak up the entrepreneurial spirit.”

“It was an honor to sponsor SB1370,” Bolick posted on X. “We need to let kids flourish and soak up the entrepreneurial spirit, not regulate their imagination and grit before they can even launch their idea.”

“Please support youth entrepreneurs like Aiden so we can free the lemons here in Arizona,” said Bolick.

S1370 passed the Senate Government Committee on Feb. 7 on a party-line vote of 5-3, with every Democrat on the committee voting “no” on the bill.

Bolick’s comments were in response to a post by the Children’s Entrepreneurial Market, which shared a video of a boy, Aiden, who testified in the Arizona State Senate in support of SB 1370.

“We are so proud of Aiden for coming to testify in favor of a proposed bill in Arizona that would remove red tape for youth entrepreneurs,” posted Children’s Entrepreneurial Market. “We can’t wait to make entrepreneurship possible for kids ALL OVER THE COUNTRY!”

Founded in Utah, the Children's Entrepreneurial Market helps organize markets in sixteen states, where children can sell their products and learn about entrepreneurship.

Bolick has represented Arizona’s 2nd State Senate District since August 2023, when she was appointed by the Maricopa County Board of Advisors to fill the seat vacated by retiring State Sen. Steve Kaiser (R-Phoenix).

She previously represented District 20 in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023. Bolick also served on the Arizona State Board of Education’s Academic Standards Development Committee and was appointed to Arizona’s Early Childhood Education and Health Board by former Gov. Doug Ducey (R-Ariz.)

Bolick attended Syracuse University and received a master’s degree from American University.

A native of Pittsburgh, Penn., Bolick lives in Phoenix with her husband.
