Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen said Governor Katie Hobbs has not given any information to the state legislators on potential cyberattacks on water and wastewater infrastructure from adversary nations.

"Water is vital to lives and livelihoods,” Petersen said in a statement. “It's concerning the Governor has yet to share any information with the Legislature, or the public, on this matter. What's even more concerning is at a recent stakeholder meeting on a completely separate issue, a representative from the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs expressed to our lawmakers no knowledge of this warning from the White House.”

I encourage her to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our citizens by taking steps to protect Arizona's critical infrastructure from enemy nations who are a known threat to our state and country,” Petersen said.

The threat was detailed in a warning letter from the White House in which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) detailed two recent attacks from Iran and China, and warned of more attacks that would disable drinking water infrastructure. The EPA asked local governments for partnership in efforts to protect against such attacks.

Warren Petersen has represented Arizona’s 14th State Senate District since 2021, and he was reelected in 2023. He currently serves as the Senate President.

He previously served in the State Senate for District 12 from 2017 to 2019, and in the State House for District 12 from 2013 to 2017 and 2019 to 2021.

Petersen attended Gilbert High School and earned a bachelor's degree and a J.D. from Arizona State University.
