U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) abstained from a vote on H.R. 7343, aka the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, a bill which would’ve required federal officials to detain migrants accused of assaulting law enforcement until deportation.
While Gallego sat the vote out, the bill passed the House by a 265 to 148 vote margin with 52 of his Democrat colleagues supporting the bill and 148 opposing it.
The Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) "to take custody of any non-U.S. national (alien under federal law) who meets certain inadmissibility criteria and is arrested for, is charged with, is convicted of, or admits to assaulting a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or other first responder."
The bill was introduced in the House in February 2024 and, while it passed on May 15, Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva abstained from voting. Rep. Greg Stanton, the only other Democratic House member from Arizona, voted in favor of the bill.
As Restoration News noted, Grijalva has a history of voting abstentions on bills concerning illegal immigration, and "he’s attacked even Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs’ halfhearted decision to send Arizona national guardsmen to the Lukeville crossing in December."
A recent report from Restoration News found that over 500 illegal alien alleged criminals were arrested in April alone. This figure included 20 illegal aliens arrested on murder charges.
According to the analysis, in April, 193 illegal immigrants were taken into custody by law enforcement in Arizona. While most were arrested for entering the U.S. illegally, some of those taken into custody had criminal records stemming from sex crimes.
Since President Biden took office, over 7.2 million illegal immigrants have entered the United States. According to a report from Fox News, this figure is larger than the population of 36 US States.
