ABATE of Arizona and EPIC Policy Group marked "Secure the Load" day last week. However, the initiative, aimed at improving safety on state roads and highways, received no acknowledgment from Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs.

According to a press release by EPIC Policy Group, "Secure the Load" day occurred on June 7. It followed this year’s expansion of the secured load law, which was sponsored by Senator Shawnna Bolick. The secured load law expansion, or Senate Bill (SB) 1376, mandates stricter fastening requirements for all motorists to ensure transported items do not create hazardous situations on Arizona roadways.

The press release highlighted that Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) data shows more than 1,100 incidents caused by unsecured loads in the state last year, leading to nine fatalities. Nationwide, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that unsecured loads have been linked to more than 65,000 crashes, resulting in 17,203 injuries and 895 deaths.

"The safety of our roadways is paramount. Expanding the secured load law is a crucial step in reducing preventable accidents and ensuring the well-being of all Arizonans," stated Senator Shawnna Bolick in the press release. EPIC Policy Group describes Bolick as the "driving force" behind the law’s expansion. She added, "While I am pleased the Governor signed SB 1376 into law, I am disappointed she didn’t recognize yesterday. I will continue to fight for Arizonans and their safety."

According to the press release, while Hobbs’ office ignored "Secure the Load" day, ABATE of Arizona and EPIC Policy Group will continue to provide ongoing education and engage in advocacy initiatives to raise public awareness and compliance with the expanded secured load law.

ABATE of Arizona President Jim Butsback said in the press release, "While 'Secure the Load' day is a symbolic reminder, securing loads should be a year-round commitment. Every motorist has a responsibility to ensure their cargo is properly secured, preventing potential hazards and saving lives."
