The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced the closure of the westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) off-ramp at Cooper Road in the southeast Valley. The closure is set to begin at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, and will last for approximately 60 days. This measure is part of an ongoing effort to reconstruct the ramp as part of the Loop 202 widening project in Chandler and Gilbert.
During this period, drivers are advised to use alternative routes by taking the westbound Loop 202 off-ramps at McQueen or Gilbert roads.
The Loop 202 Improvement Project aims to enhance traffic flow by adding lanes and making interchange improvements along an eight-mile stretch between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive in Chandler and Gilbert. Details about this project can be found in ADOT's latest podcast episode, available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, azdot.gov/Podcast, and featured in ADOT Blog posts.
ADOT's $200 million initiative includes adding two travel lanes in each direction between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road, as well as one lane in each direction between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive. The project also involves widening bridges and reconstructing on- and off-ramps.
Funding for this project comes partly from Proposition 400, a half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. It falls under the Regional Transportation Plan managed by the Maricopa Association of Governments, which acts as the metropolitan planning organization for the Greater Phoenix region.
