Improvement projects will necessitate closures on several Phoenix-area freeways this weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). These include a closure of southbound Interstate 17 near State Route 74 in north Phoenix. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and use detour routes while these restrictions are in place.

Southbound I-17 will be closed between State Route 74/Carefree Highway and Loop 303 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvement work. The on-ramps at SR 74 and Dove Valley Road will also be closed. ADOT recommends drivers allow extra time and consider adjusting travel schedules, as traffic is typically lighter during early morning or late night hours. Southbound I-17 traffic should detour west on SR 74 to southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway and use eastbound Loop 303 to return to I-17.

In north Scottsdale, northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will close between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road from Friday night until Monday morning for bridge work related to a widening project. The on-ramps at Via de Ventura and 90th Street will be closed as well.

Eastbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) is set to close between 35th Avenue and I-17 for sign structure removal as part of another widening project, with a similar schedule from Friday evening through Monday morning.

Northbound SR 143 (Hohokam Expressway) near Sky Harbor Airport will be closed between I-10 and Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) starting Saturday evening until early Monday morning for pavement marking work.

"Schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or other factors," stated ADOT, which plans new freeways, additional lanes, and other improvements in the Phoenix area under the Regional Transportation Plan for Maricopa County.

Most current projects receive funding from Proposition 400, approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. Voters recently approved Proposition 479, extending the existing half-cent tax for future transportation projects in the region.

For real-time highway conditions, travelers can visit ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or download the az511 app available for Apple or Android devices.
