A majority of Americans in the West believe the country's economy is on the wrong track, according to a recent poll by McLaughlin & Associates.
In their monthly survey of national trends related to the American political environment, McLaughlin & Associates sought insight on voters’ opinions related to a number of current topics. The survey was conducted between Jan. 13-18 and 1,000 likely general election voters were polled.
The results show 64% of participants believe the country is on the wrong track, whereas 34% say it is headed in the right direction.
Among results, poll participants do not hold an optimistic view of the nation’s economy. As of January, 62% of participants indicated they believe the economy is getting worse, while only 30% say it is getting better.
At the beginning of the Biden Administration, the general opinion of the U.S. economy was split differently. A year ago, 52% of Americans believed the economy was worsening while 4% said it was improving.
This comes as a December luncheon hosted by the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University noted that Arizona and its biggest city, Phoenix, were in good economic shape for the start of 2022. The metro Phoenix area has almost recovered all of the jobs lost in 2020, and the state's retail sales were on track to rise 20% in 2021 and 5% in 2022.
“Bad policies are pushing people out of high tax states. Arizona remains a land of opportunity as we protect lives and livelihoods,” Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, said in response to a Fox Business news report on Twitter.
In the video clip, Ducey claims the state has seen an influx of new Arizona residents who are attempting to escape the financial burden of their previous high-tax states. Arizona has a 2.5% flat tax.
As of January 2022, Survey results reveal 52% of participants believe the country is currently in a recession, while 40% believe the U.S. economy is not in a recession. When asked in March 2021, less than 50% of Americans felt the U.S. economy was not in a recession.
