Arizona Republican Congressional Candidate Abe Hamadeh stated that cartels running drug and human trafficking operations in the United States should be designated as terrorist organizations. Hamadeh made this statement in a June 10 post on X.
"The Mexican drug and human trafficking cartels are complicit in the invasion of the United States," said Hamadeh. "They must be classified as a foreign terrorist organization."
Hamadeh's statement was a response to a post by Matt Finn of Fox News, which depicted illegal immigrants from India, Yemen, Asia, and Mexico at the Southwestern border.
On March 10, 2023, Rep. Chip Roy reintroduced H.R. 1564, the Drug Cartel Terrorist Designation Act, according to a press release. The bill has not been taken up in either the House or the Senate.
According to Insight Crime, 4.5 tons of pure fentanyl and 434 tons of methamphetamine are produced in Mexico and then brought into the United States per year "in order to meet the demand of the U.S. consumption market."
Chairman Mark Green of the House Homeland Security Committee said that cartels smuggle drugs into the U.S. "all while abusing, trafficking, and profiting off of vulnerable individuals."
Abraham Hamadeh is running as the Republican Candidate for the 8th Congressional District of Arizona, according to his website.
