Republican lawmakers in Arizona are set to investigate the state's high gas prices through a Joint Legislative Ad Hoc Study Committee on Air Quality and Energy. The focus is on understanding why prices have reached $5 per gallon in several communities over the past year.

The committee, which includes Senate Republicans such as Co-Chair and Majority Whip Sine Kerr, Senator Frank Carroll, and Senator Jake Hoffman, will examine factors like the "Cleaner Burning Gasoline" (CBG) blend mandated by state law since 1997. This unique fuel is only available in Arizona and produced outside the state, leading to price spikes during supply shortages.

Senator Kerr expressed concerns about Arizona being the sole state using this rare blend. She questioned why alternatives that provide environmental benefits without financial strain aren't considered. Kerr also criticized Governor Katie Hobbs for not seeking federal waivers during a CBG shortage earlier this year, which previous governors had done to stabilize prices.

"We want to get to the bottom of why Arizona is the only state in the country using this rare fuel blend," said Senator Kerr. "We also hope to learn why Governor Hobbs opted not to provide immediate relief to motorists when she had the opportunity."

The committee aims to develop policies prioritizing Arizona drivers and economic interests over unattainable environmental goals. The hearing will take place on Monday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m., with public access via livestream.
