Republican lawmakers in Arizona have announced a new initiative, the "Teacher Pay Fund" plan, aimed at increasing salaries for K-12 public school teachers. The proposal is set to provide an average pay raise of 7% for educators without raising taxes.

The announcement follows previous efforts by Republican state lawmakers to offer financial relief through measures like the Arizona Families Tax Rebate and the elimination of tenant-paid rental tax. In the upcoming legislative session, they aim to address inflation-related issues such as gas prices, housing costs, and teacher salaries.

The plan includes a proposal for voters to renew Prop 123 in November 2024, with funds dedicated exclusively to teacher pay raises starting in summer 2025. The expected outcome is an increase of approximately $4,000 per teacher.

Senate President Warren Petersen stated, "This initiative will allow Arizona to be more competitive in teacher salaries, boosting teacher pay in Arizona above the national average." He expressed confidence in sustaining this funding source long-term due to its growth over recent years.

Senator Ken Bennett highlighted that current average teacher salaries are around $56,700 and that this proposal could raise them to over $60,000. He emphasized that it is a responsible approach without imposing new taxes on citizens.

Senator Jake Hoffman pointed out concerns about funds being diverted away from classrooms by some school boards and administrators. He stressed the importance of ensuring these resources directly benefit teachers and students: "Supporting students and families by making sure every classroom has a well-paid, high-quality teacher is common sense."
