Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags to be flown at half-mast to honor former U.S. Congressman and Arizona State Sen. Jim Kolbe, who died at age 80 on Dec. 3.

“Arizona lost a true elder statesman and political powerhouse today," Ducey said in a release from the Governor's Office. "Arizona lost a true elder statesman and political powerhouse today. Congressman Jim Kolbe never wavered in his responsibility to our state and nation. We are deeply saddened by his passing."

Ducey ordered flags at all state buildings to be flown at half-mast through Dec. 4. In addition to serving 11 terms in the House of Representatives, Kolbe also served in the Arizona Senate for three terms between 1976-1982. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1984.

“Congressman Kolbe led a life of remarkable public service," Ducey added. "A Navy veteran, 11-term congressman, state legislator – even a congressional page for Sen. (Barry) Goldwater – his commitment and dedication were boundless."

Kolbe was a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, the release added. Ducey credited Kolbe for his dedication to service. Kolbe was also one of the first openly gay members of Congress, coming out in 1996.

“He was a highly-regarded expert on trade, a champion of the free market and a passionate advocate for the line-item veto," he said. "From his community in Tucson, to those in need around the world, Congressman Kolbe had a profound and lasting impact."

Ducey added that Kolbe had "once said he was ‘born for the job.’ He certainly was and Arizona is better for it. Our thoughts are with his husband Hector, family, friends and colleagues. Rest in peace, Congressman.”
