Senate Republicans in Arizona have taken a significant step to protect children from the traumas associated with reunification camps by passing SB 1372 into law. The bill, sponsored by Senator Shawnna Bolick and co-sponsored by Senator David Farnsworth, aims to safeguard children from being forcibly taken to these camps without both parents' consent.
Senator Shawnna Bolick, the bill's sponsor, expressed her motivation for taking action, stating, "A number of families reached out to me with their horror stories surrounding reunification camps, and I was compelled to take action." She highlighted the concerning practices of these camps where children are subjected to mental health evaluations and therapies until they agree to be with a potentially abusive parent.
Senator Bolick also criticized the opposition to the bill, noting, "I'm thrilled this bill was signed into law, but I'm also utterly appalled nine out of 14 Senate Democrats and nearly all House Democrats voted 'no' on protecting our children from this heinous victimization." She accused Democrats of prioritizing partisan interests over the well-being of vulnerable children.
Senator David Farnsworth emphasized the importance of the bill in halting the cycle of victimization, stating, "Government doesn't always make the best decisions when it comes to protecting Arizona's children, and sometimes government's actions cause more harm than good." He commended his Republican colleagues for recognizing the urgency of addressing this issue and ensuring the bill's passage into law.
The legislation, which will take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the legislature, reflects the commitment of Senate Republicans in Arizona to prioritize the safety and well-being of children in the state.
