The Senate Government Committee of Reference has recommended changes to the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) following a Sunset Review. This comes after a report from the Arizona Auditor General highlighted mismanagement and constitutional violations within the ACA, under Governor Katie Hobbs' administration. The report accused the agency of benefiting corporate CEOs with extravagant gifts at taxpayer expense.
Despite these findings, Governor Hobbs defended the ACA in her State of the State Address. However, the Arizona Attorney General supported the Auditor General's concerns in a letter sent to the ACA this week.
Committee Chairman Jake Hoffman criticized the ACA's operations, stating, "The mission of supporting job creation has never been called into question. Unfortunately, the Arizona Commerce Authority has failed to execute on that mission within the parameters of Arizona law." He further accused the agency of "gross mismanagement" and "outright illegal activity."
During testimony, Sandra Watson, President and CEO of ACA, acknowledged spending millions on luxury perks without plans for legal compliance moving forward.
Chairman Hoffman emphasized accountability: "As stewards of public trust, it is our responsibility to make sure we have a government that works for everyone." He also expressed determination to ensure effective governance despite opposition from Governor Hobbs.
