The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has finalized a significant infrastructure project on US 95, enhancing the road between Yuma and the Yuma Proving Ground. The project, valued at $23.9 million, aims to increase traffic capacity by expanding approximately three miles of the highway from one to two lanes in each direction. Additionally, a center turning lane was added between Rifle Range Road and the Wellton-Mohawk Canal bridge. A new bridge over the canal is also part of this development.
Funding for this project was partially sourced from a $13.3 million grant provided by the U.S. Department of Defense under its Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot Program. This competitive grant program focuses on improving community infrastructure that supports military installations' sustainability.
This latest work complements an earlier project completed in 2022, which widened 3.6 miles of US 95 between Avenue 9E and Fortuna Wash. ADOT strategically divided these improvements into two phases to minimize disruptions for agricultural users and nearby urban and military areas.
