With the federal deadline approaching for domestic airline travelers to possess a federally compliant ID, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD) has issued over 2.5 million Arizona Travel ID cards. The requirement will take effect on May 7, necessitating either a valid U.S. passport or an Arizona Travel ID to pass through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at U.S. airports.
ADOT MVD encourages residents to join the "2,509,977 – and counting – Arizonans who have already upgraded to the Arizona Travel ID." Failure to present a compliant credential could result in travelers missing their flights, as standard driver licenses may not be accepted after the deadline.
The Arizona Travel ID is marked by a star in the upper right corner and can be obtained as either a driver license or identification card. To acquire this credential, applicants must meet federal standards by providing proof of identity such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport, their Social Security number (without the card), and two documents verifying Arizona residency like rental agreements or utility bills.
Residents are advised to schedule appointments via azmvdnow.gov for convenience, though walk-ins are also accepted. Authorized third-party locations offer additional flexibility with extended hours and Saturday availability.
