The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has completed the reconstruction of the Interstate 10 and Orange Grove Road interchange, reopening it to traffic on Wednesday morning. This interchange is a component of a $171 million project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety by reconstructing and widening I-10 between Ina and Ruthrauff roads. The interchange had been closed since April 2023, except for the westbound exit ramp.
The revamped Orange Grove interchange now features wider entrance and exit ramps designed to enhance safety and reduce delays. New bridges on Interstate 10 provide higher clearance for vehicles traveling underneath on Orange Grove Road.
Attention will now shift to the final major element of this project: creating new access to the interstate by extending Sunset Road east of I-10 to River Road. This phase involves constructing new bridges over railroad tracks and the Rillito River, funded by Pima County. Similar to Orange Grove Road, the Sunset Road interchange will have wider entrance and exit ramps than before.
The opening of the Sunset Road interchange is anticipated as the project concludes in late 2025.
Additional improvements in this project include replacing all nine bridges within the area, including those over Canada del Oro Wash and Rillito River, constructing an access path from Sunset Road to Chuck Huckelberry Loop, as well as related work on lighting, landscaping, and drainage.
This I-10 project is part of the Regional Transportation Authority’s roadway improvement plan managed by the Pima Association of Governments. ADOT continues to maintain access to businesses throughout this development.
