The state of Arizona is observing National Nutrition Month with the theme "Food Connects Us," emphasizing the significance of food beyond mere sustenance. This theme highlights food as a universal language tied to health, memories, traditions, and cultural identities.
According to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), healthy eating is crucial for a vibrant life. ADHS suggests that including a variety of nutritious foods in one's diet, along with remaining active, can provide the energy necessary to pursue personal interests and lead a fulfilling life. The department ensures that eating healthily does not mean compromising on flavor.
For individuals facing challenges in making nutritious dietary choices, ADHS recommends taking small, consistent steps for significant improvement over time. The department acknowledges that in 2021, many Arizonans did not meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. To assist in these efforts, ADHS offers resources such as the AZ Health Zone (AZHZ), providing free recipes featuring diverse foods and flavors.
Addressing a broader issue, ADHS notes that access to nutritious and affordable food is not equitable across the state. In 2022, more than 963,000 Arizonans, including 293,000 children, experienced food insecurity. In response, ADHS maintains a commitment to improving food access statewide. The ADHS Women, Infant, and Children Program (WIC) plays a pivotal role in this effort by delivering nutritious food and support to families throughout Arizona.
WIC serves 148,000 pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and young children monthly across the state, while AZ Health Zone supports over 70 communities through various initiatives. These include grocery store tours, community gardens, nutrition education, and cooking classes designed to help families make informed, healthy choices.
ADHS collaborates with the Department of Economic Security and the Department of Education to ensure consistent messaging and the promotion of programs supporting access to nourishing foods. The Arizona Food Access Map functions as a tool to identify areas with the greatest need and locate retailers that accept SNAP and WIC benefits.
During National Nutrition Month, ADHS encourages individuals to explore the diverse roles that food plays in life by trying new cuisines, sharing family recipes, and appreciating Arizona's rich culinary heritage. The department aspires to make healthy eating more attainable for all residents in the state.
