National Breathe Free recently gave Dorothy Roer, a patient of Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy and a dog groomer who has taken several pets over the years from some of her clients who have passed away, a check to help with the costs that come with caring for all of her animals. Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy physician assistant Katie Callahan was glad to help one of her patients.

"Dorothy is one of the sweetest, most kindhearted individuals," Callahan said. "After spending time with her during our office visit, I asked our regional manager, Sierra, if there would be at all a possibility, we could do something to help Dorothy out due to the financial burden of caring for these fur babies."

During their first meeting, Roer mentioned to Callahan that she was the owner of eight dogs, six cats, and two goldfish. When Callahan inquired about the reason Roer had so many pets, Dorothy explained that she had inherited many of them from deceased clients, some of whom had explicitly entrusted their beloved pets to her care. One of Roer's clients asked her the day he passed away for her to provide a loving home for his beloved puppy. Moved by Roer's selflessness, Callahan reached out to National Breathe Free, who generously provided Dorothy with a check to help with the finances that come with pet care.

Callahan credits her position at Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy for giving her the opportunity to become better acquainted with her patients. For example, she learned that in addition to the pets she’s adopted from her clients, Roer has adopted 15 pets from other shelters throughout her lifetime.

Callahan is a native of Arizona who went to the University of Arizona where she majored in physiology with a minor in communications, according to her bio page on Scottsdale Sinus and Allergy's website. She continued her medical education by studying physician assistant studies at AT Still University. Relatively new to the field of otolaryngology, Callahan also has several years of neurology experience.
