February is Black History Month, a period dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of the Black community. The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) is honoring Black leaders in healthcare and public health for their significant contributions.
Throughout the month, ADHS will highlight individuals who have made notable impacts on healthcare and public health via their social media channels. Among those being recognized are:
Henrietta Lacks, whose HeLa cells have been instrumental in medical research advancements such as vaccines and cancer treatments.
Dr. Charles Drew, known for his pioneering work in blood storage and transfusions that laid the groundwork for modern blood banks.
Dr. Jocelyn Elders, the first Black U.S. Surgeon General, recognized for her advocacy in health education and equitable healthcare access.
Dr. Mae Jemison, a physician and the first Black woman in space, who has promoted health equity and STEM education.
Dr. David Satcher, a former U.S. Surgeon General and CDC director, who has focused on addressing health disparities through research and policy.
Dr. Alexa Canady, the first Black woman neurosurgeon in the U.S., noted for her leadership in pediatric neurosurgery and advocacy for children's healthcare.
These figures exemplify perseverance, innovation, and advocacy's role in advancing public health towards a more equitable society.
The department encourages reflection on these contributions during Black History Month while urging individuals to consider how they can contribute to healthier communities through actions like advocating for health equity or supporting public health initiatives.
ADHS invites everyone to join them this month in celebrating these leaders' legacies while committing to building a healthier future for all.
