Drivers in north Phoenix are now experiencing smoother travel on Interstate 17 following a pavement improvement project by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). The initiative, which began in May 2024, focused on a six-mile stretch between Happy Valley Road and State Route 74. Major restrictions have been lifted after crews completed the installation of final lane stripes on the newly improved surface.
The project involved removing the old asphalt layer and using diamond grinding to enhance the base concrete pavement. This method employs specialized machines with diamond-tipped blades to smooth out the concrete. Additionally, older steel bridge deck joints were replaced along elevated sections of the freeway.
ADOT expressed gratitude for the patience shown by drivers and residents, as well as cooperation from the city of Phoenix during this $10.2 million endeavor. The work necessitated weekend closures to ensure safety and efficiency in completing tasks like diamond grinding and deck joint replacements.
This recent work follows a previous improvement project on I-17 between Dunlap Avenue and Deer Valley Road, finished in September 2023. Looking ahead, ADOT plans to begin resurfacing I-17 between SR 74 and Anthem Way by summer. Unlike previous projects, full freeway closures are not expected; most work will occur overnight with lane restrictions.
