With winter storms expected in the coming days, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is advising drivers to postpone travel during snowfall. This precaution aims to ensure safety and allow snowplows to operate effectively.
Snow and ice increase the risk of accidents on roads. For those who must travel, ADOT recommends being prepared for extended periods in winter conditions. This includes checking forecasts from the National Weather Service and having an emergency kit ready, as detailed on their website azdot.gov/KnowSnow.
A comprehensive winter travel kit should contain essentials such as food, water, medication, a first-aid kit, warm clothing, extra blankets, an ice scraper, and materials like kitty litter or sand for tire traction. A fully charged cellphone is also advised. Vehicles should be well-maintained with functional headlights, brake lights, defrosters, windshield wipers, and a gas tank that is at least three-quarters full.
ADOT operates 200 snowplows with 400 operators working continuously during snowstorms to clear highways. Drivers are reminded not to tailgate plows—maintaining at least four car-lengths distance—and never attempt to pass them.
Real-time updates on highway conditions can be accessed via ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or through the AZ511 app available for Apple and Android devices. Alternatively, travelers can call 511 for information.
