March marks National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, highlighting the risks associated with gambling and emphasizing responsible gaming. The Arizona Lottery has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring players understand these risks and know where to seek help.

According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, around 2.5 million adults in the U.S. meet the criteria for severe gambling problems, with an additional 5 to 8 million showing mild to moderate issues. Recognizing signs such as increased gambling amounts, difficulty stopping, restlessness when cutting back, lying about gambling activities, and jeopardizing personal relationships is crucial.

The Arizona Lottery prioritizes promoting responsible gaming as a core mission component. In 2024, it received World Lottery Association Level 2 Responsible Gaming Certification. Through its Please Play Responsibly Program and partnership with the Arizona Department of Gaming’s Division of Problem Gambling, the lottery educates the public about gambling risks and provides resources for assistance.

A portion of Arizona Lottery ticket sales supports statewide problem gambling prevention, treatment, and education programs. In Fiscal Year 2024 alone, $300,000 was allocated to the Division of Problem Gambling, contributing to a total of $6 million since Fiscal Year 2005. These funds ensure access to confidential treatment and recovery services for those struggling with addiction.

The Arizona Lottery emphasizes responsible gaming by displaying “Play Responsibly” on every ticket along with winning odds and a call for help. Information about recognizing problem gambling is available on their website and at customer service offices.

For those experiencing gambling-related issues, assistance is available through the Division of Problem Gambling's helpline at 1-800-NEXT-STEP or by texting NEXT-STEP to 53342. Additional resources are accessible at problemgambling.az.gov.

As National Problem Gambling Awareness Month continues, the Arizona Lottery remains dedicated to raising awareness and supporting individuals affected by gambling addiction across Arizona.
