Arizona Highways magazine is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The publication began in April 1925, launched by Arizona's State Highway Department with a focus on promoting road development. The initial edition featured articles on infrastructure and advertisements from road construction companies.
The magazine has evolved over the years and now delivers award-winning photography and stories highlighting Arizona's landscapes, culture, and history to a global audience of print and digital subscribers. Publisher Kelly Mero expressed gratitude to the readers: “We are sincerely indebted to the readers around the world who celebrate this milestone with our dedicated staff and contributors.”
A special centennial edition will be released, featuring milestones from each decade, reader letters, and iconic photography. This issue also introduces an Arizona Highways Hall of Fame honoring 15 contributors such as Esther Henderson, Ansel Adams, Ted DeGrazia, and Jack Dykinga. Editor Robert Stieve remarked on the significance of these contributors: “Like every great magazine, Arizona Highways measures up because of the incredible men and women on our masthead.”
The magazine encourages people to join the celebration by subscribing or purchasing copies where available. Managed by the Arizona Department of Transportation, Arizona Highways significantly impacts tourism without taxpayer funding. Its economic influence reportedly generates $43.1 million annually for local businesses through various revenue streams including merchandise sales.
